Rabbits
Do rabbits make good pets?

Rabbits are becoming more popular in households. They are very social, love to play and are generally tame.  Life expectancy can vary depending on the breed, anywhere from 5 to 10 years.

Rabbits should have interaction with their owners or other rabbits. Providing daily playtime and exercise outside of the cage will help maintain a happy, healthy rabbit.

Maintenance is low however it takes work to properly care for a rabbit.  With a little effort, they can even be litter trained.  From the time you bring your new rabbit home, place a small litter pan in the cage.  Over time, your rabbit will learn to use the litter pan.

Rabbits like to chew!   You can purchase wood blocks and sticks from your local pet store.

Diet:

Pellets alone are not a sufficient diet, rabbits need hey and lots of roughage.

Housing:

If you have the room, purchase a large cage.  Rabbits need enough room to be able to move around in. Keep in mind that the more rabbits you have the bigger the cage you will need. Always keep the cage clean and provide fresh drinking water daily.

During the Easter Holiday, there are a high number of rabbit purchases that later flood the local shelters.   Before you purchase a rabbit, do your research first and make sure a rabbit is the right pet for you.   Read about the different breeds.  Consider adopting, contact your local shelter.
