    Guinea Pigs

Guinea Pigs are mammals which belong to the rodent family. Some have very smooth coats while others have a fluffier coat. Guinea pigs are more active at night and require quiet periods during the day.

Guinea Pigs are normally good natured and they rarely bite. They have large incisor teeth and need to gnaw to prevent the teeth from overgrowing.  Males tend to be bigger than the females and the average life span is 4-6 years depending on diet and environment.

Your guinea pigs cage should be in an area free of noise and excitement. They prefer a cooler temperature rather than heat. High heat and high humidity may cause health problems. The best temperature range is 65 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit.

What they eat

Guinea pigs should have fresh guinea pig pellets and “timothy hay” with at least 18 to 20 percent crude protein and 10 to 16 percent fiber.  It is very important that your guinea pig gets vitamin C, you can add this to their water.  You should also provide fresh fruits and vegetables such as, parsley, brussel sprouts, broccoli, orange and lemon with peel.

Housing

Keep it simple.  Guinea pigs tend to play with the water bottles and spit food into their sipper bottles and flip their food bowl.  They like to hide, burrow and walk on ramps.  You can use a cardboard box but be sure to replace the box if it becomes soiled.  Use recycled bedding such as non-scented wood shavings.  Keep the cage clean and make sure it has good ventilation.
